Lucifer Season 3: The Scoop Thus Far and the SDCC Trailer

Fox made a pact for Lucifer season 3. The hellish network will take the last four episodes from season 2 and add them to the perdition of Lucifer season 3.

Lucifer was originally renewed for Season 2 and then got a "back-nine" order, bringing its episode total to 22. The series had only planned for an 18 episode arc.

‏”We designed this season to be an 18 episode arc because we originally were going to be 18 episodes. But then we got 4 more! Surprise!,” Lucifer executive producer Joe Henderson wrote to Twitter. “So we decided to create four episodes that let us play around a bit. Dig deeper into the character stories, play with format a bit, etc.”

The extra four episodes are being called "standalone" character studies. The four episodes will air at the start of Lucifer Season 3 next fall. The four episodes “stand on their own, but also pick up plots we’ve introduced and bring in new stuff we’ll play with in season 3,” Henderson tweeted.

Lucifer Season 3 Cast

Lucifer's producers announced during the show's SDCC panel that Tom Welling (Smallville) will be joining the show in season 3.

Welling will play a police lieutenant named Marcus Pierce. Pierce is described as the opposite of Lucifer in many ways, but it was also noted that Pierce's natural likeability tends to make up for his seemingly straight-laced style. Lucifer and Pierce begin to clash around the time that Pierce shows an interest in Decker.

Of course, many of you will know Welling from his as Clark Kent/Superman in Smallville. This role represents a double homecoming of sorts for the young actor who is not only returning to a Warner Bros. Television production but the DC universe as well.

Lucifer season 3 will air on Mondays at 8 pm starting in the fall, slipping into Gotham's old slot. It returns on Monday, October 2
